The rise of resilience: From the individual to the global
Enhancing recovery by supporting community resilience

The inaugural Australian Disaster Resilience Conference is hosted by the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience (AIDR), in collaboration with the Monash University Disaster Resilience Initiative (MUDRI). This Conference will run concurrently with AFAC18 powered by INTERSCHUTZ, Australasia’s largest emergency management conference and exhibition.

Themed 'The rise of resilience: From the individual to the global,' the conference encompasses national and international strategy and direction all the way through to grassroots efforts brought about by local community action. The conference aims to encourage involvement, participation, engagement and partnerships around all these facets of disaster resilience.

The Australian Disaster Resilience Conference provides an unparalleled opportunity for delegates to access the AFAC18 powered by INTERSCHUTZ trade exhibition, benefit from joint keynote speaker sessions, and enjoy opportunities to meet speakers and attend poster presentations at the AIDR-hosted Knowledge Centre.

Delegates are encouraged to customise their registration by including entrance to the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC Research Forum, which precedes the conference. With a focus on the science impacting the sector, the forum is valuable not only for researchers but anyone working in natural hazards management. The forum provides an opportunity to engage with and learn from leading research teams in the field.

Field trips | Saturday 8 September

Option 1:
Bushfire mitigation in South West Western Australia

Friday 7 September (from 5.00pm) – Saturday 8 September (concluding 5.00pm)
$400 + GST
Includes: Transport, accommodation, meals (breakfast, morning tea, lunch and dinner)

The South West region of Western Australia has an area of 23,970 square kilometres, and a population of about 170,000 people. The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River is a popular tourist destination, with people attracted to its fine wines and vineyards, cave formations, scenic forests, national parks, restaurants, art galleries, coastal scenery and world-class surf beaches. Viticulture and wine processing are critical to the strength of the local economy.

The field trip offers important insights into the complexities of prescribed burning and other risk management activities at each of the locations visited. Participants will be provided with an overview of the bushfire mitigation and response arrangements in Western Australia. Visits to prescribed burning sites will allow detailed discussion of planning, implementation and post-burn reporting activities, and of regional challenges, including the impact of smoke on wine grapes. Examples, such as the Bushfire Ready Program in Yallingup, will highlight the achievements of local staff, volunteers and communities in progressing bushfire risk management activities in this complex, multi-tenure environment.

Option 2:
Exercising Level 3 incident controllers and incident management personnel with the use of computer and virtual reality simulation
– a functional role exercise

Saturday 8 September
$75 + GST

This masterclass will focus on the concept of 'functional role exercises.' Functional role exercises allow a number of personnel from a single, AIIMS, functional role to be exercised simultaneously and provide opportunities for coaching and mentoring. They are conducted using a rotational format using specific ideas related to an incident, or general ideas, briefed at the beginning of the exercise. Exercise control perform the roles of all other incident management personnel except for the functional role being exercised.

During this presentation the audience will learn how the Western Australia Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) have used computer and virtual reality simulations to exercise specific skills, reflective of tasks performed during an actual incident, that are complex or resource-hungry to simulate under other means. Skills exercised include providing incident appreciation, community meetings, interactive tabletop scenarios and external agency meetings. These technologies provide a fit-for-purpose experience over and above the traditional, functional and tabletop exercises used currently by emergency response agencies.

Through these scenarios, DFES are able to exercise the decision-making processes of those involved in high level incident management.
