The program will be delivered across two half-days, using the Bureau’s online learning platform.

This masterclass is essential learning for all who work or volunteer in a disaster resilience-related role. This includes people working on disaster risk reduction, preparedness, planning, policy, response, recovery, community education, communication, business continuity and other areas.

Weather and climate are major drivers of disaster risk. For those working in the disaster resilience sector in Australia, weather-related disasters are a major focus and cause extensive damage.

Developing a deeper understanding of how weather works will enable you to make more informed decisions and plans, as well as provide better risk and hazard information in the workplace and to the community.

The masterclass is facilitated by a professional meteorologist, providing the opportunity to ask questions and clarify your understanding on important weather information relevant to your role.

 

Frequently asked questions

Who will lead the masterclass?

The masterclass will be led by an operational meteorologist from the Bureau of Meteorology Training Centre. All presenters are accredited trainers with extensive experience delivering introductory courses about meteorology in locations around Australia.

What do I need to join online?

All you need is a computer that supports video and sound (speakers and microphone), and a stable internet connection. It is helpful to have two screens (or one computer screen and a tablet) available, so that you have easy access to both your virtual classroom and the Bureau of Meteorology website. More detailed instructions will be provided by the Bureau of Meteorology after you have registered.

Are there any prerequisites?

There are no prerequisites. Limited science knowledge is assumed. The masterclass is tailored to the disaster resilience community so it is assumed that you have an active professional or volunteer role, or are undertaking relevant studies.

 What do I need to do to prepare?

Once you have registered to attend the masterclass, you will be directed to enrol via the Bureau of Meteorology’s online learning management system, Moodle. You will be invited to complete a brief pre-course survey about what you would like to get our of the masterclass and any special requirements. You will also be able to view some course materials in advance to read prior to the masterclass if you choose to, but this is not mandatory.

You will have the opportunity to share any special learning requirements with the masterclass facilitator before the day so that they can attend to your needs.
